LF Energy Digital Substations is a special interest group collaborating on open source solutions for substation digitalization and virtualization
Substations face increasing complexity due to the fluctuating nature of renewable energy sources. The LF Energy Digital Substations Special Interest Group (SIG) addresses these challenges by optimizing substation operations through advanced data management, dynamic protection settings, and adaptive automation. Projects under the Digital Substations SIG are supported by contributors including grid operators, solutions providers, and service providers working collaboratively to solve the biggest challenges of substation digitalization and virtualization.
The projects currently included in this SIG are:
- CoMPAS: The primary goal of the CoMPAS project is to develop open source software components related to IEC 61850 model implementation, specifically for profile management and configuration of a power industry Protection Automation and Control System (PACS). CoMPAS’s goal is to deliver a production-grade reference implementation of the IEC standard.
- FledgePOWER: FledgePOWER is a multi-protocol translation gateway for power systems based on the industrial IoT LF Edge project Fledge. FledgePOWER solves the problem of multiple protocols by providing the industry with a flexible, lightweight, industrial-grade, open source gateway.
- SEAPATH: SEAPATH is an open source software hypervisor designed for IEC61850 Digital Substation Automation Systems. It has been designed and built as an industrial-grade solution dedicated to the critical context of digital stations, meeting the challenges of interoperability, standards compliance, and cybersecurity constraints, while hosting and running VPAC (Virtualized Protection, Automation and Control) applications.
