Event Report — LF Energy Seminar in Japan: The Latest Trends in Open Source for the Energy Industry
The inaugural LF Energy Seminar in Japan was held on November 27, 2025. Thanks to the support of Hitachi, Ltd., an LF Energy General Member, the event took place at the Lumada Innovation Hub Tokyo – an innovation space directly connected to Tokyo Station, designed to foster new value creation and co-creation for digital transformation (DX) that addresses constantly evolving social and environmental challenges.
Despite the busy year-end season, professionals engaged in the energy sector, along with researchers and engineers interested in DX leveraging open source and cloud native technologies, gathered for a day of learning, insights, and networking.

Welcome Remarks & Opening Session
In the opening remarks, Noriaki Fukuyasu, VP of Japan Operation of the Linux Foundation, welcomed attendees. Industry-specific OSS projects are essential for accelerating industry-wide transformation by enabling the sharing and resolution of challenges, ecosystem formation, and the joint development and standardization of common technologies.
Mr. Fukuyasu indicated his intention to foster a community in Japan, centered around LF Energy members, to support the DX of the energy industry, starting with this inaugural LF Energy Seminar.

LF Energy is a foundation under the Linux Foundation dedicated to accelerating the energy transition through open source. It provides a neutral space for collaboratively developing open technologies and standards to address common challenges faced by the energy sector.
At this seminar, speakers from Tokyo Gas, Hitachi, and Toshiba introduced how LF Energy and other open source communities are supporting DX across the energy sector. Furthermore, a case study from Tokyo Gas was shared as an example of an advanced initiative in Japan.
Session Highlights
OSS Trends and LF Energy
Yuichi Nakamura (Hitachi, Ltd.) Presentation Deck
Mr. Nakamura provided an overview of the evolution of open source software and current trends, highlighting how OSS has become indispensable in today’s business environment. He introduced key OSS ecosystems in which end users actively participate, including the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), a central hub for cloud native technologies that underpin generative AI, and LF Energy, which serves as a collaboration platform for the energy industry.

LF Energy Deep-Dive
Nao Nishijima (Hitachi, Ltd.) Presentation Deck
LF Energy promotes international collaboration to support the digital transformation of the energy sector by jointly developing open technology foundations, data models, and standards that enable a reliable, secure, and clean energy supply. This presentation introduced these initiatives, with a focus on projects related to the digitalization of power system operations.

Tokyo Gas Group’s Cloud Transformation Journey
Yusuke Sugiyama (Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd.)
The Tokyo Gas Group has been actively promoting cloud migration to continue being an “energy that weaves the future,” aiming for the realization of a future decarbonized society and the stable supply of energy. By joining the CNCF End User Supporter program in October 2024, the group is further accelerating its initiatives. This session introduced a part of these efforts.

Building a Sustainable Social Infrastructure with OSS: Civil Infrastructure Platform (CIP)
Yoshitake Kobayashi (Toshiba Corporation) Presentation Deck
Systems that support society require long-term reliability and security. The Civil Infrastructure Platform (CIP) is an open source project that provides a long-term-maintainable OSS base layer for industrial applications. In this session, Mr. Kobayashi introduced CIP’s initiatives and achievements, along with Toshiba’s use cases, highlighting the potential of OSS in enabling sustainable social infrastructure.

Networking Reception
Following the sessions, a networking event was held, set against the backdrop of the stunning view of Tokyo Station from the venue. In a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, attendees shared their expectations for building an LF Energy community in Japan and their enthusiasm for expanding collaboration with more companies and engineers. The gathering provided a valuable opportunity for cross-sector networking, particularly among energy companies.

Looking Ahead
This seminar marked a steady step forward in the formation of the LF Energy community in Japan. Open source is expected to play an increasingly important role in addressing the major challenges facing the energy industry, such as digitalization and decarbonization.
Updates on future seminars and community activities in Japan will be shared through the channels below. We invite you to stay connected and join us in expanding the LF Energy ecosystem within the energy sector, a growing area of focus within the Linux Foundation community.
