How open source can fix EV charging problems

0

One of the reasons why people are hesitant to buy an EV is because of the inadequate availability of charging stations. Incompatibilities between charging stations and electric vehicles lead to a fragmented industry with many protocols and interpretations. Governments are trying to fix that by standardizing around Tesla technologies, but the problem remains. LF Energy-hosted open source project EVerest aims to provide a reference implementation for all protocols in the EV charging industry, covering communication to the car and cloud, to simplify and standardize the charging process. In this interview, Piet Gömpel, Tech Lead at Pionix, talks about the work the company and the community is doing around this problem. He strongly feels that participation by EV makers like Tesla will boost the adoption of such standardized technologies.
