ORES (Open Renewable Energy Systems) is an open source initiative under LF Energy focused on accelerating the development and adoption of interoperable, modular, and intelligent energy systems.
ORES aims to enable energy resilience through community-driven innovation in software, standards, and system architecture that support distributed renewable energy.
Originally focused on defining open APIs and reference models for microgrids and distributed energy resources (DERs), ORES has evolved into a flexible umbrella working group that supports a broad range of initiatives—from plug-and-play integration of clean energy assets to the simulation of autonomous energy networks. ORES provides a foundation for scalable, decentralized energy systems that empower households, communities, and regions to actively participate in the clean energy transition.
ORES addresses critical gaps in today’s energy ecosystem: lack of interoperability, fragmented device control, and limited support for distributed, edge-based intelligence. The project provides architecture guidance, and open standards to simplify the design and deployment of microgrids, community energy systems, and home-scale renewable integration.
- Plug-and-play microgrid deployment and integration with existing infrastructure
- Open standards for energy device metadata and interface APIs
- Community-driven best practices for grid-interactive buildings and home energy networks
