CDS Registration simplifies secure connectivity between energy systems and third-party services.

CDS Registration defines open, interoperable specifications for how third-party systems connect to and interact with electric utility platforms. These standards enable secure discovery, registration, and profile management – laying the groundwork for a flexible, decarbonized, and digitally integrated grid.

Why It Matters

Modern energy systems are rapidly evolving to include a growing ecosystem of distributed energy resources, customer devices, and service providers. But today’s connectivity methods are often proprietary, fragmented, or poorly documented.

CDS Registration provides the foundation for trusted, interoperable connectivity between utilities and the third-party entities they increasingly rely on for grid coordination, customer engagement, and clean energy services.

By adopting CDS Registration specifications, stakeholders can:

  • Enable seamless, standards-based onboarding of devices, services, and applications

  • Reduce integration complexity and cost for utilities, vendors, and aggregators

  • Ensure security and trust in third-party grid interactions

  • Support interoperability across markets, platforms, and protocols

Use Cases

The working group focuses on key connectivity use cases:

  • Initial Configuration of Grid Communication Protocols: Simplifies setup for new participants in the energy ecosystem.

  • Configuration Management: Supports secure updates and lifecycle management for registered entities.

These use cases are essential for unlocking scalable coordination in demand response, distributed energy resource (DER) aggregation, virtual power plants, and more.
