Carmen Best, Director of Policy & Emerging Markets at LF Energy general member Recurve, was also the head of EM&V at the California Public Utilities Commission, so she has a unique view on performance-based regulatory oversight with respect to energy efficiency, giving regulators tools to make intelligent decisions about energy.

Last week, she published an excellent article on the way open source can drive better data for energy efficiency in a regulatory environment, with a particularly interesting discussion on open source and collaborative development.

The first ever LF Energy Summit was held recently in Edinburgh, Scotland. This event brought together power system engineers with open source developers to start building a community of utilities, TSOs, DSOs, vendors, and other energy leaders dedicated to accelerating the global effort to transform the world’s relationship to energy. Shuli Goodman is the founder and Executive Director of LF Energy. During her keynote presentation she put a call out for “10,000 developers to electrify the planet.” Wanting to know more I asked her about about the project, its current status and future plans. The Linux Foundation announced its latest effort on July 12, with the launch of the LF Energy open-source coalition for the energy and power management sector. The LF Energy coalition is being backed by French transmission system operation RTE, Vanderbilt University and the European Network of Transmission System Operators (ENTSO-E). With LF Energy, the Linux Foundation is aiming to replicate the success it has seen in other sectors including networking, automotive, financial services and cloud computing. Read More »
