Why neutrality matters
Energy is a multi-stakeholder industry. Grid operators, vendors, regulators, and researchers all depend on the same infrastructure, and none of them can afford technology steered by a single company’s interests.
LF Energy is governed to serve the industry, not any one organization. Decisions are made in the open, roadmaps are set by the community, and the rules are the same for everyone. That neutrality is what lets competitors collaborate and what gives a project credibility with regulators and buyers alike.
Built on proven frameworks
The operational backbone that makes collaboration safe and durable comes from the Linux Foundation.
- Legal and IP. Clear contribution agreements, license selection, and regular license scans of dependencies.
- Security. Built on the OpenSSF Best Practices framework, with funded independent audits for key projects.
- Antitrust. Frameworks and training for safe collaboration among competitors and across vendor-customer lines.
- Project lifecycle. A defined path from early-stage to mature, so each project’s status is clear.

How LF Energy is governed
Governance is distributed across complementary bodies, all operating under the Linux Foundation. The Governing Board sets direction and budget, the Technical Advisory Council guides the technical portfolio, the Standards and Specification Steering Committee oversees standards and specifications, and the staff supports the community day to day. Each project also governs its own technical decisions under a shared, open framework.

Director of Communications
Dan Brown oversees marketing and communications operations for several Linux Foundation projects including LF Energy, eBPF, and LF Europe. He has held a variety of marketing-related roles at the Linux Foundation, including heading marketing for the foundation’s events and training businesses. Dan previously held senior roles in B2B technology-focused public relations agencies in London, San Francisco, and Chicago. He holds a BS in Public Policy and Management from the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles and an MA in Public Communication and Public Relations from the University of Westminster in London.

Director of Program Management
John Mertic is a Program Director at the Linux Foundation. Under his leadership, he has helped ASWF, LF AI & Data, LF Energy, ODPi, Open Mainframe Project, and R Consortium accelerate open source innovation and transform industries. John has an open source career spanning two decades, both as a contributor to projects such as SugarCRM and PHP, and in open source leadership roles at SugarCRM, OW2, and OpenSocial. With an extensive open source background, he is a regular speaker at various Linux Foundation and other industry trade shows each year. John is also an avid writer and has authored several books, most recently "Open Source Projects - Beyond Code: A blueprint for scalable and sustainable open source projects", as well as published articles on IBM Developerworks, Apple Developer Connection, and PHP Architect.

Shuli Goodman (1957-2023) was the founder and Executive Director of LF Energy, a Linux Foundation project that supports open source innovation in the energy and electricity sectors. LF Energy’s ambition is to accelerate the energy transition and the decarbonization of the world’s economies. Having spent the early part of her career enabling some of the world’s largest companies in the world to become Internet-ready, she brought her digital-first, cross-industry background to the electricity sector. With a doctorate in Organizational Systems focused on innovation and the energy transition, Shuli had a uniquely multi-disciplinary approach to solving complex, interdependent problems. She had nearly three decades experience in the startup and ongoing support of governance and multi-stakeholder engagement bodies that have been convened to enable decision-making and provide steering capacity for high-visibility and/or high-risk initiatives. Her goal was to inspire, train, and enable 10,000 developers, in the next 10 years, to digitally transform the world’s power systems.
